What gets lighter
Photos and scans are recompressed, and the file is cleaned of unnecessary data. The text stays sharp: it is not turned into an image.
Still too heavy?
Delete the pages you don’t need (grid view, G key), or download only the pages that are required with “Only”.
Scanning a document?
When scanning, choose “Black and white”: it’s the lightest result, and the most readable for text.
Questions
How much smaller will the file be?
It depends on the content: a PDF full of photos gets much lighter, a PDF made mostly of text is often already light.
Does the quality drop?
Photos are slightly less detailed, with no visible difference on screen in most cases. The text stays identical.
Is my document sent over the Internet?
No. Everything happens in your browser: the file never leaves your device, and Rature even works offline once opened.
Is it really free?
